Critic’s Corner (*new!*)

The majority of books and movies and tv shows targeted at kids are horrible and should be ridiculed mercilessly.  Never one to shy away from an opportunity for taking some shots at the low-hanging fruit, here are some of my reviews* of kid media.

* Some of these are maybe not so much “views” as “rambling observations of a sleep deprived father”.

Review #2 – Random alphabet picture book that is really for 1 year olds, yet mine love it.

    Hey Dave,
Mate it’s been a while. This probably isn’t the most appropriate place to leave you messages. I’ll provide a small critique of Goodnight Moon so as not to upset the punters.

Goodnight Moon is apparently a classic, but this doesn’t forgive its complete lack of storyline. Really it’s just some dude saying goodnight to a bunch of stuff. The reader quickly realises that the author cares more about superficial objects and vermin than children (as no children are mentioned anywhere in the text). I would suggest that our narrator is actually quite drunk or high, which would explain wishing a pair of mittens, some mice and a bowl of mush goodnight (not to mention the vision of a bunny whispering hush).

Wow, the girls have gotten big! We need to move back so our children can hang out again. I’m a ridiculous father. I’m already worrying about who my children are hanging out with.

We will send you a proper email later. I just thought I’d touch base while I was reading your blog.

    Cheers
    Chris
